No. The intent classifier analyzes the transcript in real time and determines the question type automatically. You can optionally set a preferred mode in settings, but the default automatic detection works for the vast majority of interviews.
Interview Yen is available for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android. It's built with Flutter for a consistent experience across platforms.
Recording works offline, but real-time transcription and AI analysis require an internet connection to communicate with the Whisper and Qwen AI servers.
When a behavioral question is detected, Interview Yen activates a live STAR coach. It tracks which sections of the STAR framework you've covered (Situation, Task, Action, Result) using local keyword classification, shows a running timer, and delivers contextual nudges every 15 seconds if you're spending too long on one section or missing key elements.
The copilot uses multiple triggers: question marks in the transcript, common interview question starters ('can you', 'how would', 'design a', etc.), conversation pauses over 1.5 seconds, and word count thresholds. When any trigger fires, AI analysis begins immediately.
Responses stream to your screen via server-sent events as they're generated — you see the first words within seconds. There's no waiting for a complete response. The streaming approach means you can start reading guidance while the AI is still generating the rest.
Yes. When a coding problem is detected, the AI generates a structured response with a concise approach, working code solution, time and space complexity analysis, and edge cases to consider. It supports all major programming languages.
Interview Yen uses self-hosted Whisper AI for speech-to-text transcription and Qwen 2.5 for intelligent analysis and response generation. Each of the six intent types has a specialized system prompt optimized for that question category.
Every AI analysis is saved as a timestamped note in your session. You can scroll through all detected questions and responses during or after your interview. Coding problems are pinned to the top of the screen for quick reference.
Audio segments (8-20 seconds) are sent to our Whisper server over HTTPS, transcribed in memory, and immediately discarded. Audio is never written to disk or stored on our servers. The only thing that persists is the text transcript, which lives in your app session memory.
Transcripts and AI analysis exist only in your app session memory. When you close the app or end a session, all content is cleared. There is no server-side history of your interviews. We do not retain, log, or backup transcript content.
Interview Yen is built by the same team behind InterviewZen, a proctoring platform. We are transparent about this relationship. No user data, audio, transcripts, or AI analysis results are ever shared between the two products. They operate on completely separate infrastructure.
Account authentication uses AWS Cognito with JWT tokens. We never store passwords. Tokens are refreshed automatically and stored securely on your device using platform-native secure storage (Keychain on iOS, EncryptedSharedPreferences on Android).
Download Interview Yen from the App Store or Google Play. The app walks you through a 3-page onboarding, asks for privacy consent, then lets you create an account or sign in. Grant microphone permission and tap Start — the copilot handles the rest.
Interview Yen works out of the box. The AI automatically detects question types and adapts its responses. You can optionally adjust the assistance mode (auto, coding-focused, behavioral-focused, etc.) and preferred language in Settings.
Microphone access for recording and internet access for transcription and AI analysis. On iOS, it uses background audio mode to keep recording if you briefly switch apps.
During your session, all AI-generated notes are available to scroll through. You can export the full transcript and notes before ending your session. Once you close the app, session data is cleared for privacy.

Ensure your device microphone is not obstructed and you're in a reasonably quiet environment. The app includes voice activity detection and noise handling, but very noisy environments may affect accuracy. Place your device closer to the audio source for best results.
